Hawk Ridge Systems has partnered with Rocket Fuel Gives Back once more to present you with the STEM summer classes!
On Wednesday, Holly and I were able to head out to Redwood City so Holly could help kids in the Silicon Valley further their education through SOLIDWORKS and engineering.
Our first project was building a simple structure from uncooked spaghetti, string, tape and a marshmallow. We could only use the items given to us and nothing else to build the tower. We were instructed that we could not tape the structure to the table or anything else.

Holly helped a boy and his mother while I helped another group. My group was able to build a tower much like the Eiffel Tower and it stood on its own!
After this, Holly went to teach the class on SOLIDWORKS. She was able to present the students with Minecraft and Quad Copter models, showing them some of the tools SOLIDWORKS has to offer. She showed them how SOLIDWORKS gives 3D engineers the option to virtually test a model before it’s manufactured. We reviewed the Collision Detection tool, which is used to ensure the moving components of the assembly won’t collide with other parts.
When she showed the students that by moving the propeller on the Quad Copter, it would collide with the guard, they used 3D engineering to help me figure out why that wouldn’t work properly (with Holly’s guidance, of course). The guard was in the wrong spot, so we moved it in order to replicate how a Quad Copter functions in reality.
